Pianist for the left hand YASUYO SEGAWA
YASUYO SEGAWA born on March 2, 1988 in Hiroshima, Japan.
Left hand pianist Yasuyo Segawa is currently concentrating on her musical studies in Austria and Italy. Aside from her concerts in Europe, she also performs actively in Japan as a way to connect the people with music.
She has performed in a wide variety of concerts, such as concerts with a theme of world peace, lecture concerts in schools, and concerts with other artists including instruments, voice, and public reading.
Yasuyo started playing the piano at the age of 3.
During her years at Yasuda Girls Middle School and High School, she was the accompanist of the choir, and spent her years surrounded with music.
The first symptoms of Focal Dystonia appeared in her right hand in 2005, when Yasuyo was 17 years old. She was diagnosed with it a year later, in 2006. During her one-year rehabilitation, thanks to the recommendation from her former teacher, she came across piano works for the left hand. In 2009, she saw a concert played by a left hand pianist and was moved by its magnificence. She was greatly encouraged by the performance and decided that she was going to become a left hand pianist. “I want to give hope and courage through my music. I want to learn and specialize in piano works for the left hand,” she decided at that time. From 2009 to 2012, she has studied under the left hand pianist, Takeo Tchinai.
She graduated Elisabeth University of Music in 2010, and studied under Professors Yoshiyasu Hamamoto and Yukio Yokoyama. During her studies, she received the University President's Award. Yasuyo played at the Graduation Concert, 80th Yomiuri Rookie Concert, 31st Hiroshima City Rookie Concert, and the Chushikoku Rookie Concert.
In the year 2012, Yasuyo was accepted to the University of Music and Performing Arts, Graz (Austria) with her left hand performance. Since then she has been studying rendition of musical expression for left hand performance under Professor Ayami Ikeba. Yasuyo also participates in many master classes offered by famous pianists and educators such as Pavel Gililov, Jacques Rouvier, Arkadij Zenziper, Aquiles Delle Vigne and Robert Levin. Since the winter of 2016, she has been a part of the Talent Music Master Course in Brescia (Italy), and has been taking frequent lessons from the Pianist/Conductor, Andrea Bonatta.
Along with her studies, she has been performing in concerts as a soloist in European countries such as Austria, Germany, Greece, Italy, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland and Czech Republic. Her CD release in 2013 Japan, invitation to Evmelia Music Festival in Greece 2016, and piano recitals in Slovakia, Serbia, Czech Republic (2016) are considered to be her biggest achievements. In 2010 and 2012 she played with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra performing the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand composed by Ravel, and the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand “Cepheus Note” composed by Takashi Yoshimatsu. From 2012 to 2014, she was chosen and has received the Nakamura Music Scholarship, and in 2017, she was chosen as the Richard Wagner Foundation scholar, and subsequently she was invited to the Bayreuther Music Festival in Germany.
As a way to spread the fascination with music for the left hand and also to improve her performance, she has been taking part in international competitions as a left hand pianist along with both hands pianists . Since 2013 she has been awarded many prizes. In 2013 she received 1st Prize (absolute) at Val Tidone International Competition Cat.D (Italy). In 2015 she received 1st prize at Filadelfia International Competition Cat. F (Italy), 3rd prize at the International Piano Competition Maria Herrero (Spain), Grete Sultan Prize for the best performance of the contemporary piece at the 5th Nuova Coppa Pianisti International Piano Competition (Italy), 3rd prize at the 9th Campillos International Piano Competition (Spain) and 1st prize (absolute) at Martha Debelli Scholarship Competition (Austria). In 2016 she received 3rd prize at WPTA International Piano Competition (Serbia).
